QA/QC Technician, Leon Barker-Williams is the latest learner to achieve CQI and IRCA accreditation. Leon, who started working as an Apprentice at Exyte Hargreaves in 2019, first studied the Foundation courses with rove. In 2020 he progressed onto the Practitioner level courses, successfully completing the Practitioner Certificate in Quality Management earlier this month.
Following his achievement, we asked Leon about his role as a Quality Apprentice, how he enjoyed his learning journey with rove, and how his studies have helped him progress in his career.
I BEGAN MY APPRENTICESHIP WITH EXYTE HARGREAVES IN 2019
Leon began working at Exyte Hargreaves in 2019 as a Quality Apprentice.
“After undertaking a BTEC L3 in Mechanical Engineering, I landed a job at Exyte Hargreaves as a Quality Apprentice. They were looking for the next step to develop my career.
“That’s where the business found rove. After seeing the certification and development you get out of it, the decision to go with rove was a no brainer!”
The company had identified the CQI and IRCA training pathway as the ideal route for Leon to progress through the levels, while developing his skills and knowledge.
Leon began studying the Foundation courses in 2019 and quickly progressed to study Practitioner courses in 2020.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MY ROLE IS THAT TWO DAYS ARE NEVER THE SAME
“The best thing I would say about my role, is the fact, that every day could be completely different to the previous.”
From compiling LTQR packages for client acceptance, to taking ownership of delivering project specific LTR packages Leon’s role is varied.
“I’m also involved with creating and controlling ITP’s for new and existing projects and insuring adherence to stringent weld and NDT standards and specifications,” explains Leon.
As well Internal Auditing and ensuring compliance with internal procedures and external legislation (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001), Leon also inspects welds using PT and MT inspection processes.
“I also enjoy meeting different types of people, from suppliers to clients. Everyone has a different story and I enjoy finding out about their journey’s.”
THE COURSES ALLOW ME TO USE MY NEW KNOWLEDGE AND TACKLE ISSUES ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS
The CQI and IRCA certified Foundation and Practitioner courses have been of great value to Leon.
“Learning about the different processes within Quality and 9001, allows me to tackle tasks a lot differently and follow proven techniques.
“They have also helped me to not only use the knowledge in my day-to-day activities, but also help me to tackle new problems which may arise.”

“My favourite bit about the CQI and IRCA courses is how they are broken down into separate modules. This allowed me the focus on one section at a time. I was able to really get my head round each course before sitting the exam.”

Finally, we asked Leon what advice he’d give to others who are contemplating studying a CQI and IRCA Quality Management course.
“I would advise others to put in the work and effort into their studies. If you do, it will help you in your job role and give you a good foundation for progressing your career.”
